As we’ve noted before in this space, your Table Leg World team spends many weeks each year out on the road, staying on top of emerging trends in home and office furnishings. We make lots of new friends each time we head out, and we also have the opportunity to build relationships that benefit our customers at TableLegWorld.com.
A few weeks ago, we attended one of the truly great shows on the office furnishings circuit, the 2014 NeoCon at Chicago’s Merchandise Mart. While we attend many great shows around the world, including multiple shows in Europe and Asia, NeoCon is perhaps the most important show in the western hemisphere. North America’s largest exposition for commercial interiors, NeoCon attracts more than 40,000 architect, design, facilities, and procurement professionals across every industry imaginable.
At this year’s show, the Table Leg World team sourced many great products from some really intelligent companies. We were particularly blown away by the creativity of the adjustable-height desk sector. While we have sold motorized and crank-armed versions of sit-to-stand desks for a few years now, we have longed to see designers come up with seating that fits the modern and individualistic ethos of the desk marketplace. We can say with total confidence that 2014 is the year such creativity has emerged in seating, with two companies in particular standing out: Focal Upright and Swooper.
Focal Upright is the latest brainchild of designer Martin Keen, perhaps best known as the founder of KEEN Footwear, the fastest growing outdoor brand in the world over the last decade. Focal Upright features adjustable-height workstations, as well as complementary chairs based on a leaning concept developed by Keen. Proposed as the perfect balance between sitting and standing and thus optimized for sit-to-stand height adjustments throughout the workday, the Locus Seat causes natural spinal alignment through dictating a leaning position from the user. The pivoting seat of the Locus enables effortless activity throughout the day, as it powers motion both forward/backward and laterally.
Swopper is another innovative design company that has launched multiple types of seating optimized for sit-to-stand desks. The company bases its core concept on leaning and motion, much like Focal Upright. Swopper offers multiple leaning and seating bases, with the ability to retrofit with backrests for those who need extra back support beyond the leaning position. With its AIR concept, Swopper offers fabrics and seat design that allow for breatheability and heat-regulating comfort.
Thanks to all of the companies who turned out for this year’s NeoCon—2014 will go down as one of the best years for advancements in commercial interior design, and we are thrilled to see companies like Focal Upright and Swopper emerging as real contenders for innovation in adjustable-height desks and seating.
